summer has begun!

i thought i should let y'all know that summer has officially begun. is it the increasing humidity? the temperatures over 100 degrees? the plethora of bugs? nope, none of those (although all of those have happened!) the leadership staff arrived at camp on friday, and that officially begins my summer.

currently we have 7 summer staff members here. i don't think that they have been here long enough to give you an accurate description of what the summer will be like, but i definitely think you can figure out how the summer will go based on your leadership (aka director) team. i will let you know in a few days. although, i did just give my staff a lecture about not judging the staff based on past experiences or rumors or anything - "let's give everyone a fresh start this summer" i said basically. we'll see if that actually happens. i'm hopeful.

this camp is so different from the place i was before - in colorado they give the kids choices and they get to hire the best staff because they have enough people to interview that they actually get to say no to more than 2 people in one summer, they think it's fabulous to sleep outside because the stars are amazing and there aren't really bugs to worry about. they choose to cook over campfires because it's a fun challenge. they expect the best out of their staff and the director's set that expectation by following the rules themselves.

but, in texas we've got room for improvement and i've been trained by the best, so bring. it. on.

it'll be a great summer...just a little different than the summers before, and that's ok. but i think i'm no longer allowed to look at that "other" staff's pictures on facebook because it makes me homesick.

oh, and i keep learning about rodents and bugs that live in my house and i'm sick of it. as soon as i get a break i'm buying every kind of poison and trap that will fit in my car and setting them up in my house. THIS IS WAR!

you're so lucky!

two posts in one night - you're so lucky! i was going to spread them out over two days, or at least a few hours, but let's be honest...the second one probably wouldn't happen then!

ok, so a few random thoughts for you tonight:
  • i bought some blackberries because they were on sale and they are DELICIOUS!
  • i love living at camp...i just wish camp didn't live in my house. i have ants and bugs and mice i think - BLECH! i'm working on solving that. ps i clean my house, i promise, but when you can feel the wind blow in your house when all the windows are closed, i think it's pretty easy for nature to get in.
  • i love jason mraz's new live and acoustic cd and i'm sad he's touring in europe because else i would totally go see him. well, on second thought maybe it's better that he's not touring in the us now because there's this thing called camp starting in less than 48 hours.
  • i'm going to the john mayer, brett dennan, and colbie callait concert in august and i'm so excited!
  • but, i'm wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more excited for our south dakota adventure on june 20th. two wonderful people are getting married in sioux falls, so i'm flying to denver to catch up with 6 other friends where we'll pile into a car and drive to sioux falls. tickets from austin to sioux falls are just too expensive, so it just makes sense to do it this way :)
  • health insurance is a pretty great thing. so is having a job that gives you the comforts of things like health insurance and vacation days.
  • i'm really excited for my staff to join me at camp starting on FRIDAY!
  • i really love my new car (especially the air conditioning and the fabulous gas mileage) but i'm a little heart broken over the loss of my jeep.

ok i'm done. thanks for reading.

now i'm it!

well, in my line of work, i know many different types of tag. there is toilet tag, elbow tag, freeze tag, everyone's-it tag, tv tag, medic tag...the list goes on. however, i had no idea there was blog tag! so, just as any good non-suspecting victim gets tagged while playing tag, i just got tagged. the tagger will remain unnamed to you, because i kind of like the secrecy...and the tagger does too i think.

my understanding is that when one gets tagged, you are supposed to spill 3 random things about you, and then tag someone else. i've been thinking about this for a long time, trying to come up with interesting things to tell you. i'm not sure if all that thinking paid off - you be the judge!

1. i think only rachel knows this one, but i could be wrong. i love cake batter - any kind, lemon, white, vanilla, funfetti, chocolate, although i'm not a huge fan of strawberry. ok, lame thing to know - that's what you're saying right? BUT one of my favorite desserts is cake batter, so currently in my cupboard i have 2 cake mixes (1 lemon and one chocolate) that are partially eaten. i pour a little of the mix into a bowl, add some water and wa-la! cake mix for me to eat for dessert. please don't judge. and i think you all should try it before you knock it.

2. it really really really REALLY bothers me when people take their sweet time getting on the on ramp to the highway - especially when they use their BRAKE on the on ramp. come on people! what's the point of an on ramp? to accelerate enough so that you match the speed of the other travelers on the highway, therefore you must use the on ramp to ACCELERATE. that is my biggest pet peeve right now because some drivers in texas are just out for sunday drives ALL THE TIME, and they drive me crazy. however, on back country roads, i absolutely LOVE that slow cars usually move over to the shoulder for you to zoom zoom past them.

3. haha this one is a funny little quirk about me. when i went camping last weekend, it became very apparent to me that i move a lot when i sleep and that me and mummy bags don't really get a long because i don't EVER sleep on my back with my legs straight and my hands laying neatly next to me or across my stomach. (i already knew that, i was just reminded of that because i haven't slept in a sleeping bag for quite a while.) but, an even more unique thing is that my right foot has to hang off the edge of the bed. it's best if both of my feet (mostly just the toes because i usually sleep on my stomach) hang off, but the right foot is most important. maybe this is because my bed was too small for me as a child....just kidding! i had a very nice bed as a child. my bed as an adult though could use some work! i blame this silly little fact on this: when my mom was pregnant for me she said my foot stuck out the side of her stomach and that you could clearly see that it was a foot.

ok, so now i'm supposed to tag someone who reads my blog and also blogs for themselves. that could be a little difficult. i read people's blogs, but i'm 99% sure they don't know that i have a blog, so that won't work. so, if you're reading this, and you have a blog of your own (where you blog about more than amateur radios...) then you are officially tagged! (and you should let me know haha!)

for the BLOG NAZI!

i blame today's events on the blog nazi! she wanted me to post something because she was bored, but i had nothing of note to blog about....until the tree exploded. let me explain...

the weather started off this morning with a down pour. i'm still getting used to texas weather, because this struck me as a little odd. in colorado, i'm pretty sure it NEVER rains in the morning. maybe i'm wrong, but that's what i remember. anyways, this morning it was pouring. i watched the weather on the austin channel for a little bit but it didn't seem too serious so i kind of ignored it.

after putting on my rain jacket to walk the 20 yards to the office, i settled into the work day by turning on my computer and getting situated like always. pretty soon, everyone starts to gather on the porch to watch the rain come down because we haven't had a good rain storm in at least a month or so. (people in texas are afraid their entire state will burn to the ground if they don't get rain for a week, so this was a big deal.) as we're standing on the porch, the storm starts to diminish, the rain is letting up and the lightning is dying away. we're all chatting when KKKKKAAAA-BBBBBAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!! there's this huge bolt of lightning and thunder right on top of each other (because of course, lightning doesn't make any noise, thunder does). i saw a big bright yellow light over to my left and matt, who was looking in that direction, just drops his jaw and says something like "holy sh*t." i look over just in time to see what was this enormous tree, splinter and fall to the ground.

luckily, it was still raining pretty hard, so the tree didn't burst into flames or anything. this picture doesn't do justice for how big the tree was - it was massive! it is a cedar tree, which is sweet because then the inside of the tree is a great combo of white wood and red wood - beautiful!

luckily, our maintenance guy gene is ah-mazing, and he and tyler took care of the tree later that afternoon. now all that's left is a giant stump. i think this picture gives you a better idea of how humungous this tree actually was.

so that was my excitement for the day. tonight i went and hung out at my favorite church for a night of multi-generational jeopardy. my team won :) maybe because we had a pastor on our team, but maybe because we were just THAT amazing.

this weekend i'm off to go camping with some girl friends! i'm super excited to hang out with them and use my new tent! i'm sure i'll have a story or two from that next week, so hang in there blog nazi :)
