1. i turned on the heat in my house today. mostly because i left the windows open and it was just a little too cold compared to the 80 degree temps yesterday, and 90s over the weekend. No matter where you are, a temperature drop of 30 degrees from the day before FEELS cold. whether or not it actually is cold is up for debate.
2. in texas they don't give Ds. A, B, C, and F are all fair game, but not Ds. I was talking to my middle school kids about it and they all looked at me like I was crazy. then they proceeded to call me OLD. me, old, can you believe it? me neither. although the grocery store thinks i'm old cuz they don't id me when i buy alochol. whatever.

my internet is fixed!
we had a guest this week that happened to be a very handy computer man. he agreed with me that my internet problem was indeed an internet problem and not a computer problem. he fixed quite a few problems while he was here. he fixed my internet, i cleaned his bathroom. i think that's a fair trade!
well, i would like you all (notice that is not a contraction, simply two words) to know that i am now officially a college graduate. yes, dad posted pictures of my with my diplomaS, but they just now got hung up on my wall. i think that's the sign of being an "official" graduate. i was going to hang them in my office, but i thought that was a little too much for me.
people here continue to be super nice and hospitable to me. matt invited me out to dinner with his fam and jen's fam. it was a great dinner with fun people, although it did make me a tad late for grey's this evening. oh well, i guess people are more important than tv ;)
kristen and jenny come tomorrow! i spent most of the evening cleaning today - but not just because they were coming, because my house was dirty. i am not turning into my mother.....

too much guitar playing!
as i start to type this, i can't really feel the tips of my fingers on my left hand. don't worry, it's not some strange disease, i've just been playing my guitar too much, a "problem" that i enjoy having. i'm starting to get used to all this free time, although i still need some ideas of what to do.
this weekend we had some crazy church ladies out here. they found every single minor problem at camp you could ever imagine. one group of ladies called me 3 times about their air conditioner, saying it wasn't cold enough in their cabin and that their air conditioner was "broken." well, of course i freak out thinking "gene (the site manager) is gone...what am i going to do?" then i think "wait, i'm an engineer, i can handle this." so i go over to the cabin, and see that although the fan is turned up all the way, the temperature is set to the warmest setting, thus the cabin is not cool. i'm so good at fixing air conditioners. i also changed light bulbs, "fixed" toilets, showers, and flipped a whole lot of breakers. it was an exciting weekend, let me tell you, these women were crazy. they invited me to join them for their next retreat, and i said, yep, i'll be there because i'll be here working it. silly ladies. they also took it upon themselves to clean their cabins every day (they were only here thursday night to sunday afternoon...) so needless to say, they are probably cleaner now than when they first moved in! that's ok by me.
not much else is going on here, but oh yeah, it rained like CRAZY today! i walked from my house to the truck which was parked just outside of my house, and by the time i got there, my shorts were literally soaked. definitely the biggest rainstorm i've seen in a very long time, if not ever (although i'm not sure anything can beat the storms we had at camp this summer!) but i got to test out my rain jacket!
i get this weekend off! horray! jenny and kristen are coming to visit me, and matt told me i could have the weekend off since he's been gone every single weekend since i got here just about. i'm excited for them to come visit. after that life gets crazy with trips to ohio and then ropes course training in palestine, tx and not to long after that is thanksgiving in michigan and indiana and possibly ohio again.
oh, i've also been reading a lot (which pleases my library school attending roommate) but it's not all that exciting to talk about. oh, and the wireless at camp is being screwy, so i have to go to the office to get any internet. they think it's my computer, i think it's their internet. justin agrees with me.

cleaning
today i get to clean. cabins 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, plus the retreat house, canteen, nurse's station, and the ark, oh and probably the dining hall.
i'm so glad i have two bachelor's degrees in cleaning...oh wait, that's not right.

CO vs. TX
lately i've been noticing how different texas is...so here's a comparison for you guys:
roadkill - roadkill in colorado is usually squirels, rabbits, skunks....in texas it's armadillos. i guess the common thread here is deer though :) same with animals you find all around, in colorado you always see bunnies and squirels, here you see armadillos. no joke, one was in my yard last night when i got home. i'll try to get a picture soon. and spiders. they're big enough you should count them as animals.
hoodies - a year round necessity in colorado (as well as fashion statement), where in texas i'm wearing mine for the first time, and that's only because the air conditioning is on too low...although they still are a fashion statement for the 3 days a year you can wear them.
rain - in colorado it pours for maybe 20 minutes once a month, in texas it rains and then doesn't really stop, and certainly doesn't dry out any time soon. today it felt like it should be raining but it wasn't, it was just really, really, really humid (and i'm used to the humidity now!).
language - apparently i talk fast...that's what i've been told. i think everyone in texas just talks slow. and doesn't annunciate!!!!! also, in colorado if you say "ya'll" people look at you funny. in texas if you say "you guys" people look at you funny and then ask where all the guys are.
roads and directions - in colorado the roads have names. in texas, roads have numbers, and no one knows them. when you ask for directions is usually something like "you take a right where this person lives, then go about 5 minutes, and then take a left next to the red barn, and then another 10 minutes down the road is where my mother's cousin lives, and then ...." well you get the idea.
seasons - in colorado i look forward to the summer. in texas everyone dreads the summer because that means you pretty much have to stay inside because else you will melt. BUT everyone looks forward to the other 9 months of the year because it's the perfect temperature (i have yet to see this...but i'm trusting)
smoking and vegetarians - in colorado you're pretty much not allowed to smoke anywhere and there are vegetarians everywhere. in texas, you're pretty much allowed to smoke anywhere and people can name only 1 person they know that's a vegetarian, and look at you funny if you don't order meat.
4WD - people in colorado have SUVs in case it snows (bear with me, this is a generalization). in texas everyone has SUVs because they are a status symbol. i'm pretty sure they've NEVER used 4WD... except for that one time they went off of FM 2145 (one of the roads by camp, still not sure exactly which one is 2145 and which is 2981) and got stuck in the ditch (FM means farm to market road and 2145 is the name of the road).
weather - in colorado you wait 5 minutes and the weather changes. i'm still waiting for the weather here to change and it's been a month.

good picture day
this morning started off with me waking up to the radio, but the first thing i heard was the dj saying she was a cu buffalo! woo hoo, i'm not the only one! that was a good way to wake up. and oh yeah, if you haven't heard, cu won big time against the #3 ranked team on saturday, so we're moving up in the world! plus, it was a home game and they rushed the field afterwards - and i missed it. but the important thing is that we won. that's always the important thing ;)
over the last few days people in the office have realized that i like to take pictures, so they asked me to take new pictures of all the buildings on site. so as the sun was setting today and the lighting was WONDERFUL, i set off to take some pictures. well, in my true style, i got distracted and forgot about the outside of the buildings and was much more entertained by the sunset and the different parts of the building instead of the building as a whole (probably because i'm not good at architectural photography). anyways, you can see what happened here:

yesterday i went to katy, which is a town just outside of houston (just = 25 miles) with a HUGE outlet mall. but this was a texas outlet mall, and the biggest question i had when i left was "how many tons of cooling does that building take?" yes i'm a dork, but it was also probably the biggest mall i've ever been in. the only outlet part of it was that everything was cheaper than regular malls. the only outlet malls i've known have been like strip malls, where you walk outside inbetween each store. but in texas, i was thankful for the millions of tons of cooling, because it was a hot day.
today was supposed to be 91, which is pretty standard by now, but at least it's getting not as hot (i'm trying to avoid saying 'chilly' or 'cold') at night, which is nice. in the mornings when i go running it's usually a lower temperature outside than inside my house. oh - breaking news! i no longer feel like choking when i walk outside due to the heat and humidity. i think i'm getting used to the weather here! tonight while i was out taking pictures, it was probably the most perfect weather. plus i bet you're all jealous i can wear shorts, a tshirt, and flip flops to work in october (both to work and in october, pretty sweet huh?)
today i found out my schedule for the end of october, and it's a little crazy:
oct 27-nov 4: outdoor ministry conf in ohio
nov 5-8: ropes course training, 3 hours from here
no 9-11: our family retreat that i'm supposed to be in charge of, which includes a lot of programming. should be an interesting 2 weeks!
