tonight i went out to las fuentes (one of the 2 resturants i've been to in la grange, but i've been here multiple times, it's pretty good) with some of milisa's friends (milisa started the same day i did at lutherhill). she used to work at a bank with a bunch of people, and they still meet for drinks every last friday of the month. this week i acutually had a friday night off (go figure!) and so i got to go with her. so we're just sitting there chatting and this very panicked looking guy comes up to one of the girls and says "you work at the bank right?" and she says "yes, but i've been on materinity leave for the last 6 weeks..." and he says "well, my son just lost his debit card, what do i need to do?" and of course i'm sitting at a table with bankers or used to be bankers and so they all have suggestions for him. crazy that he walked up to that girl and knew she worked at the bank at some point. crazy small towns.
i think that's all for now. i made it home just fine today without hitting any deer!
oh, and it was weird "going out" with these people tonight. we left at 8:45 pm...if i were in boulder, we wouldn't have even been leaving the house yet. buh bye college life...

no homework?!?!
i'm still getting used to this no homework thing, but i sure do LOVE it! i get to come home from work and do WHATEVER i want to. usually that's play guitar, call people, go to town (meaning go to HEB or walmart), or decorate. nothing too exciting, but it's a nice change from engineering school and then summer camp. plus, this weekend i actually get a friday night off! that hasn't happened since i've been here since we usually have a group here. i think i'm going out with one of the ladies from work and all of her friends. should be an interesting time for sure.
matt and i have been working on job descriptions for summer staff. man, that sounded like a fun job at first, but it's really tedious and time consuming. it's stretching my vocabulary as we try to come up with just the right word to convey what we want the person in that job to do. and then there's the line of specificness (yes there is a line called that, i just named it). do you just say "be christ-like" and hope that's enough? or do you need to say "put the camper before yourself, for example...." and then list every possible situation in which the counselor needs to act selflessly. somewhere in there is a line, and a very fine line at times. but, it's going well and we're almost done. we're changing things around a bit too, which is exciting to think about how great the summer will be (and how many more people will be around!!)
the season premier of the bachelor was a nice start to the week. a dose of 25 crazy girls fighitng over one guy is ALWAYS entertaining. tonight is the season premier of addion's new show (the red head from grey's anatomy duh) and then tomorrow is THE premier we've all been waiting for....grey's anatomy. i suggest catching that one, it'll be worth it for sure.
other than that life is pretty normal. i need to start working on getting a texas driver's liscense because technically my 30 days are up soon (but shhhh don't tell them and it'll be ok) because there are a lot of things i have to do before i can get my new dl, like get new insurance, get my car inspected, and actually go to the dmv. i'm guessing i'll get that done by christmas, haha.

nothing much.
not much is happening now. we have two groups here this weekend, a ladies group and an adult group from the church. the ladies group told me "we've been here before and we know what we like and we're not afraid to ask for it." and that is the truth. i have a cell phone that i carry for "emergencies" and they called it twice in 2 hours. granted, they were legit things, but still, no one calls the cell phone. they also needed help getting a masuse (a person who gives massages, not sure if i spelled that correctly...) to come out to camp. so these ladies really do know what they want. we'll see how the rest of the weekend goes.
oh, the most exciting news is that i went to Second Chance which is the thrift store in town and got some super cute containers for flour, sugar, salt, etc. they match my kitchen pretty much exactly and they are really old and cool. you should be able to see the picture right here! you know life is boring when i'm posting pictures of my newest dishes...i'll work on that.
it's supposed to be 94 all week long...i can't wait for it to get colder. it's already getting chillier at night, but still during the day it's roasting. the mornings are great though, so i'm sitting outside right now and i'm not even sweating!

it's been a while...
wow, sorry for the lack of updates. i know you all must click on my blog every few minutes during the day, hoping that i have written more about my oh-so-exciting life. well, here you go.
on tuesday, i left work early and went to college station/bryan where my friend from camp lives. it was good to just see someone who i already know and don't have to do all that small talk crap that i hate. i think we talked pretty much nonstop for 4 hours or something. hopefully she'll be coming down here to check out camp soon!! she only lives about an hour and a half away, so that's pretty sweet.
i had wednesday and thursday off this week. i kind of like having two random days off more than two days in a row. there's just not that much to do with two days off. at least with two random days off i can go to the grocery store both times or something. life in la grange is pretty hectic.
i finally got the door to my jeep fixed! a friend from work called her friend who knows a guy who owns a auto body shop, so she hooked me up. it was kind of sketch, but i'm learning that sketch in la grange is really not sketch at all, just small town. his shop was way on the edge of town (since la grange is so big and all) and it was basically just a barn with a bunch of cars in it. he had this suction cup thing to pull out the dent, but it was a pretty tough dent, so he took the door apart and pounded it out. total time: 15 minutes, total cost: $20. pretty sweet! i was expecting to have to leave it over night and get a ride to and from the car place and then spend like $200. i like this way MUCH better.
this weekend we were supposed to have 3 retreats onsite, but one of them cancelled. the group that cancelled was from UT and it's a game weekend, so that was bad planning on their part. there's a women's retreat that is apparently high maintenance, and another one but i forgot who they are.
i haven't gotten any spider webs in the face in a while - but now i probably jinxed it! during the day it still gets up in the 90s, which is not so fun (but at least the air conditioning is fixed in my car!!) but this morning it was almost chilly when i went running!
i'm trying to think of funny stories to tell you, but not much has happened in the last few days. oh i did hear a funny quote on the radio. i was flipping through stations and some how stopped on some southern baptist preacher man. here's what he said, in his southern-baptist-preacher-man-on-the-radio-voice: "when our children are little, we tell them that if you kiss a frog he turns into a handsom prince and that's called a fairy tale. when we tell them a frog turns into a man when they're older, that's called evolution." oh man! can you believe that? i hope i never sound that ignorant.

debunking the myths of camp
i'm watching the news right now, learning that UT has about the same problems as CU does with those silly football players who misbehave. at least we're not the only ones.
lately i've heard many comments of "oh, so you're getting ready for the summer already?" and "what do you do at camp if it's not summertime?" well, let me tell you, things are busy around here, whether or not it's summer. yes, we are working on things for next summer already, but we also have lots to do that don't have anything to do with summer.
first, there are two seasons at camp: summer and retreat. we have at least 2 retreats per weekend until november. we have a few free weekends in november, and then it's back to retreats constantly, even one on christmas day! the retreats range anywhere from church councils to high school kids to ladies craft retreats. some of them only use our facilities, but some of them use us for programming stuff too (like using the ropes course, the pool which needs a lifeguard, or small group leading). every retreat is different, but usually they come in on friday night and then stay until sunday sometime. it is pretty relaxed once they get here, but we have to clean and get ready for them to come, which usually happens on friday. not my favorite part of the job, but it's ok. at least i don't sit in the office all day long every day!
camp is also based a lot on relationships. relationships with staff, with campers, with congregations, with the synod, and with other camps. we're working on those relationships all the time. for example, texas lutheran univeristy had a camp chapel that we went to the other day. part of that is to be visible on the campus for interested students to come talk to us, for us to check in with our summer staff that goes to TLU, and to check in with the other camp staff to see how they're doing.
then, we're also working on interview questions, job descriptions, and applications for summer staff. those will be going out in november sometime and it's a pretty big process. also, we're working on lots of publications - like the summer brochure, retreat brochures, etc. we're also just starting a HUGE capital campaign trying to raise over 6 million dollars.
so yes, we're working on summer stuff, but we're working on so much more. i hope that helps debunk the myth that i'm just sitting around waiting for summer to start again.
plus, i'm not that excited for summer to come because i already think it's too hot. looks like 93-94 degrees for the next week at least. temperatures in the 90s in september? YIKES.

the greatest surprise thus far
today matt, justin, and i went to TLC (Texas Lutheran University - ps how they call it a university is a mystery to me, there's only about 1600 kids!!!!) for camp chapel. they have chapel (worship) every tuesday/thursday, but today it was camp-themed and run by all the kids that worked at a camp this summer (mostly lutherhill and chrysalis). so justin and i drove there together and matt met us there because he was coming right from the airport. so we're walking around the commons area and guess who i run into? jay miller. we worked on staff together back in 2002, 2003, and 2004 and now he's on staff as program director at camp chrysalis. so exciting! the first person i've seen in almost 2 weeks that i actually KNOW. i was very excited.
other than that things here are fine. my work computer's hard drive crashed, so i've been using my laptop at work for a little bit. luckily my work computer was on a huge surge protector, so we're collecting our money for a new computer from the surge protector company because it failed. whatever, i just want my computer back! there's only so much work i can do on my lap top, or without a computer at all. yesterday was spent cleaning the linen closet...not so fun.
the only other exciting things are waiting for the mail to come. i've ordered quite a lot of things online, such as grey's anatomy season 3!!!, pictures, and a blanket and now i'm just waiting for them to come in the mail, along with promises of people in colorado sending me stuff as well. the poor post office will soon learn to either love or hate me i think.
i think that's it for now. although here's a plug for a few artists i've found lately - joshua radin, snow patrol, and jon mclaughlin. check them out, they're amazing.

adventure!
i had quite the adventure yesterday. i finally drove into austin to shop at somewhere other than walmart. i went to two goodwills, kohls, ana's linens (i think that's the name...), target, and linens and things. quite the adventure, let me remind you that my jeep doesn't have air conditioning in the traditional sense. also, my kind of air conditioning is broken too because one of my windows won't roll down. it was a hot day. i got lots of fun stuff for my house. it's coming together, but man, having a whole house to myself is expensive! i'll post pictures as soon as i feel i am completely done decorating, or at least mostly done.
i have a theory about texas heat. when you first walk outside, you're blown away by the heat and humidity and you feel as though you can't last 5 minutes outside. but right about the 5 minute mark, you're thinking 'man, i can handle this, it's not that hot.' and really, it's not bad...for a while. then, depending on how hot it actually is outside, including the heat index (which is the opposite of wind chill for you coloradoans), you hit another point where you say 'get me out of this stinkin' heat!' like i said, that point in time is directly proportionate to the heat index. i'm still working on the exact formula.
my kitchen is coming along nicely. there were two white chairs at the kitchen table that i decided needed to be red. one of them is red right now and the other will soon follow. i might need a different method of painting though, spray paint just doesn't look all that great. we'll see what my next trip to walmart brings. i also bought a red tea pot (i copied rachel, i know).
my room looks fab! i got a new comforter and bed skirt and shams. i ordered a blanket online (will i ever need a blanket in tx? i'm not sure, but people do say it gets 'cold' here. i'll let you know, don't you worry). with the poor lighting in my room, the mint/mineral/platnium/sage green on my white bedspread looks silvery, and i'm all for that. my walls are a medium purple, so the silver and white look quite nice. so, you'll either have to wait for me to continue decorating, or come visit me to see my new decorations.
oh! and they finally fixed my shower. the knob was super super hard to pull to turn the water on (ex. when the maintenance man tried, he broke the knob before getting the water to come on) so Gene (the maintenance guy) called the plumbers. well, they weren't the brightest bulbs (yeah, i know bright is a relative term and i should probably say they weren't the most luminous bulbs) and they ended up messing something up. so one day my shower worked but hardly had any water at all and the water was only luke warm at best. the next day my shower didn't work at all; i turned it on and cold water dribbled out of the faucet. so i showered at the retreat house. the plumbers came again on monday and finally fixed it. turned out they messed up my shower, but i was only getting cold water because my pilot light went out - which i didn't know because of course i checked the sink for hot water when the shower wasn't hot and it was still hot. that's my adventure with my shower.
ok time for work. hopefully my work computer turns on today. it didn't turn on sunday, and they were going to fix it while i was gone yesterday i think. here's hoping!

matt's a liar
oh, and storyhill isn't coming here. they're coming to san antonio or something, but not here. matt lied. and i remind him of that daily.
big city girl
i went to go pay for my windshield, and the credit card machine wasn't working. so they gave me my keys and said can you come back tomorrow? no can i have your credit card number? no can you write a check? no nothing. it's cool that it's a small town, but man, strange, and certainly a change from boulder. monument is not that big, but it feels way bigger than here. i feel like a big city girl, maybe that's the boulder part or maybe the monument part of me.
yesterday we went out to lunch, me and the guys, to this meat market thing. you order your lunch by telling them how many slices of each kind of meat you want. then you get potato salad and either crackers or bread. there were parts of a cow just hanging out on the butcher block. definitely wouldn't find that in boulder! it was good meat though, and i don't know meat.
then we went to the second hand store, second chance. it's only open on friday and saturday from 9-3. another interesting place to be.

just another day...
on my way to get my windshield fixed, i tried to roll down my driver's side window, which apparently doesn't roll down anymore. another thing to get fixed, yippee!
tomorrow i get to go with matt to a youth director's lunch or something like that. it might be in houston, i'm not sure, i know we have to drive a little ways to get there. i'll figure it out tomorrow. today has been pretty slow. evan went to houston so he's gone, and the rest of us are just plugging away. i made a facebook group for lutherhill staff, since no one else knows anything about facebook. we're hoping to use that as a way to get staff to work retreats up here during the retreat season. we'll see how that works. hopefully for the summer staff we'll create a facebook group like rtlc did. we'll see how it goes!
i decorated my office a little more today, but i need to go to town to get some things, which is made difficult by the fact that my car is broken. i went running the last two days and now i can hardly move cuz my legs hurt, so probably not bike riding to town either. that would be a pretty decent bike ride anyway. so, i have to entertain myself at my house, which is still fun. i'm learning how to just chill because i have no homework to do!!!! i'm still very excited about that small fact.
things i've learned about texas:
- don't walk inbetween two things, always walk in big open spaces to decrease the chance of getting a spider web in your face...or a spider in your face.
- you sweat just by BEING
- everyone knows EVERYONE in la grange. no joke, and they're probably related.
- clothes don't dry so well outside, but put them inside in the air conditioning and it works a lot better.
- living by yourself is great because you can play loud music until you don't want to anymore and you don't have to do your dishes unless you want to.
- camp is camp no matter where you are.
i'll keep you updated as i keep learning :)
tomorrow i get to go with matt to a youth director's lunch or something like that. it might be in houston, i'm not sure, i know we have to drive a little ways to get there. i'll figure it out tomorrow. today has been pretty slow. evan went to houston so he's gone, and the rest of us are just plugging away. i made a facebook group for lutherhill staff, since no one else knows anything about facebook. we're hoping to use that as a way to get staff to work retreats up here during the retreat season. we'll see how that works. hopefully for the summer staff we'll create a facebook group like rtlc did. we'll see how it goes!
i decorated my office a little more today, but i need to go to town to get some things, which is made difficult by the fact that my car is broken. i went running the last two days and now i can hardly move cuz my legs hurt, so probably not bike riding to town either. that would be a pretty decent bike ride anyway. so, i have to entertain myself at my house, which is still fun. i'm learning how to just chill because i have no homework to do!!!! i'm still very excited about that small fact.
things i've learned about texas:
- don't walk inbetween two things, always walk in big open spaces to decrease the chance of getting a spider web in your face...or a spider in your face.
- you sweat just by BEING
- everyone knows EVERYONE in la grange. no joke, and they're probably related.
- clothes don't dry so well outside, but put them inside in the air conditioning and it works a lot better.
- living by yourself is great because you can play loud music until you don't want to anymore and you don't have to do your dishes unless you want to.
- camp is camp no matter where you are.

the first day at camp
hi all!
i never thought i would be writing a blog...but here goes nothing. i figure this beats mass emails because you can check it whenever YOU want.
first, to give you an idea of how hard my life is, i'm sitting one of my two screened-in porches, in my porch swing, typing on my lap top. it's the perfect temperature for shorts and a tshirt. the only sound i can hear is the left-over rain water falling from the trees and some bugs. but, i have a screened in porch, so the bugs aren't bothering this girl.
today was an interesting day. mom and dad left early this morning to head back to colorado. i spent the day making banana bread, cleaning, and decorating - not such a bad life i'd say, since some of you reading this are already working on homework, ha! i went to walmart to get a few more things and realized the first person i talked to all day was the cashier. that'll take a little getting used to, but normally i'll have someone around to talk to i think. i went to dinner with most of the people i work with tonight. apparently most places are closed on mondays in la grange, but this place was open even on labor day! i've had a great time getting to know the people i'm working with, they are geuinely nice and considerate and are doing everything they can to make sure i'm doing ok.
the drive home was not so great - i hit a deer. well, more like it jumped at my car. it hit the driver's side mirror and completely shattered my windshield. i'll take pictures when it's daylight. the windshield is stil intact, but you can't see through it very well. i think that's all that happened though - the windshield is smashed and the side mirror was flattened against my car, but it's made for that. we'll see what it looks like in the daylight. there is a little bit of glass inside my car, but really not bad at all. it sure could have been a lot worse!
so, other exciting news happened at dinner. matt (my direct boss, who is way cool) says "hey sara, do you know a group named storyhill?" i almost screamed yes i love them! but instead i said, "yeah, i know them." he said they're coming to la grange! no way...a town of 5000 people draws a HUGE name band like storyhill?? haha go figure. they're coming sometime this fall, and they might even be staying at camp! matt is going to talk them into playing the actual concert at camp, so we'll see what happens! i'm so excited, a little piece of familiar in this huge state.
that's about all from my end. i'll take some pictures of my place once i have it more decorated. it's super cute, so just be prepared. i miss you all, have a lovely night!
